In short

What the check-up is.

Your dentist listens to what has brought you in, then examines your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth and face, takes the x-rays that are needed, and shows you what they find on the screen. You leave with a written plan and its price, or with nothing to do until the next check-up, which is the commonest outcome.

What the fee covers

Included in the examination, and priced separately.

The examination fee is the examination. Everything else in the fee guide is priced on its own and told to you first, so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay.

The examination includes

  • The examination itself: teeth, gums, bite, and the soft tissues of the mouth and face.
  • The conversation: what was found, what it means and what the options are, in plain words, on the screen.
  • The written plan with its price, before anything is booked. Nothing starts until you agree to it.
  • A second opinion on treatment proposed elsewhere, if that is why you have come. Bring the plan or the x-rays if you have them.

Priced separately, when needed

  • X-rays: a small x-ray £9.50, the large OPG £65, a CBCT scan £125.
  • Cleaning: a hygiene visit £70, or a scale and polish with the dentist £76.60.
  • White fillings from £76.60 for a small one to £250 for a large one.
  • Children: an examination with x-rays £15, fissure sealants £35 a tooth, fluoride £27.90.
  • The routine examination after your first, £27.90.

The Dental Barn at Fernhill Court, Balsall Common

What it is like

A new practice, built to take the dread out of it.

The Dental Barn is a new practice in a converted barn at Fernhill Court, between Balsall Common and Berkswell, run by the team behind Designer Smiles in Solihull. It was set up on one idea: private dentistry, with its time, its materials and its technology, priced from the NHS bands, so that the check-up most people put off costs £27.90 rather than a reason to wait another year.

The dentist tells you what is about to happen before it happens, and you can stop at any point. If it has been years since your last visit, that is common and nobody here is interested in telling you off. For anyone who needs it for longer treatment, sedation is available at £350 a session from Dr Amelia Reed, who has provided sedation in hospital oral surgery for over a decade.

Hygiene visits

Clean teeth and settled gums, priced too.

A hygiene visit is £70: plaque and tartar removed above and below the gum line, gum disease treated, and the way to keep your gums healthy at home shown rather than told. You can book one without seeing a dentist first at £85, stained teeth can have Airflow stain removal at £105, and a child’s hygiene visit is £35.

What it costs

Priced from the NHS bands.

The NHS has three band charges for a course of treatment. The Barn sets its examination, its small white filling and its crown at those three figures, and prices everything else in the fee guide in the open. What you get for them is private: the time, white fillings as standard, porcelain made to a scan, and a hygienist when you want one rather than when a band allows it. If you are entitled to free NHS treatment, an NHS practice will cost you less than we do, and we would rather say so.

Questions

Asked before people book.

How much is a check-up at The Dental Barn?

£27.90 for a new patient, the same figure as an NHS Band 1 charge, and £27.90 for each routine examination after that. X-rays are priced separately, from £9.50 for a small one, and only taken when they are needed.

Are you an NHS dentist?

No. The Dental Barn is a private practice. Our check-up, small white filling and crown prices are set at the NHS band charges (£27.90, £76.60 and £332.10), which is where the phrase NHS-level prices comes from. If you are entitled to free NHS dental treatment, an NHS practice will cost you less than we do.

Are you taking new patients?

Yes. We are a private practice, so there is no NHS list to wait for: book online, call 01676 611000, or message us on WhatsApp, and the first visit is the new-patient examination.

How often should I have a check-up?

As often as your own mouth needs, which your dentist sets at each visit: anywhere from three months for someone with active gum disease or decay to two years for a healthy adult who looks after their teeth. Most adults come once a year.

What happens if I need treatment?

You are shown what was found, told the options, and given a written plan with each item’s price from the fee guide. Nothing is booked until you agree. A small white filling is £76.60, a crown from £332.10, and both are the NHS band figures.

Do you see children?

Yes. A child’s examination with x-rays is £15, a child’s hygiene visit £35, and fissure sealants, which protect the biting surfaces of new back teeth, are £35 a tooth.

I am frightened of the dentist. Will that be a problem?

No. The dentist tells you what is about to happen before it happens, and you can stop at any point. For longer or surgical treatment, sedation is available at £350 a session; Dr Amelia Reed has provided sedation in hospital oral surgery for over a decade.

Can I book a hygienist without seeing a dentist?

Yes. A direct-access hygiene visit is £85; a hygiene visit alongside your check-ups is £70. If the hygienist sees something a dentist should look at, they say so.

Can I spread the cost?

Our membership plans start at £10.62 a month for an examination and a hygiene visit a year, with an out-of-hours emergency consultation included and 10% off treatment. The three plans are set side by side above and in full on the fees page.

Can I get a second opinion?

Yes, and people do. Book a new-patient examination and bring the plan or the x-rays you were given; your dentist examines you afresh and tells you what they would do and what it would cost here.
